Michael Andrej Kubik — MaK to everyone who knows him — spent his working life in IT and now spends it, more or less, on the same equipment other people are throwing away. He runs a self-hosted homelab built largely from decommissioned business hardware, reflashes retired consumer routers with OpenWrt, and is a persistent advocate for the idea that the most sustainable device is the one that already exists.

He volunteers at Makerspace Adelaide, is a member of SA Makers Inc., and helps out at Repair Café Blackwood, where the same principle gets applied to toasters, lamps and laptops with a stuck fan.

Away from the bench, his projects tend to wander: FreeCAD and laser-cut acrylic, a 1975 Honda MT250 slowly becoming a resto-mod, wicking garden beds, and a fermentation habit that has outgrown the kitchen bench.

He lives in the Adelaide Hills with his partner Kay, three dogs — Sam, Maisie and Aya — and a cat named Pi, who is not permitted near the soldering iron.
